Belgium’s only mountain stream

The Ninglinspo tumbles 3.5 km from the heights down to the Amblève at Nonceveux. Over this short course the water runs through small waterfalls, boulder fields and clear pools with mythological names: the Bain de Diane, the Bain de Vénus, the Bain du Cerf. This relief, rare in Belgium, is what earns it the title of the country’s only mountain stream. The valley is narrow and wooded, and the sound of water follows you all the way up.

The 6 km loop, step by step

The classic loop is about 6 km. You follow the stream uphill on a narrow path that crosses from one bank to the other, then come back down through the wooded heights. Start from the Sedoz or Nonceveux car park, by the Amblève. Allow 2 to 3 hours with breaks to look at the pools and have a picnic. The path is wet and rocky, with a few steep sections: good walking shoes are essential, especially after rain.

With children

The walk suits children who walk well, from about 6 years old. The path cannot be done with a pushchair: for the youngest, a baby carrier is the only option. Bring water, a snack and spare clothes, because wet feet are part of the adventure. Children love spotting the pools one by one on the way up.

When to go

The Ninglinspo is beautiful in every season. In spring the flow is strong and the waterfalls are full. In summer the cool valley is welcome, but the site is very busy at weekends: start early in the morning or come on a weekday. In autumn the forest colours are superb. After heavy rain or in frosty weather the rocks become slippery. On site, follow the signs, stay on the paths and take your litter home.
