A campsite on the Way of St James through the Belgian Ardennes
On foot or by bike towards Santiago: a quiet stop on the Lienne river, between the Aachen and Liège branches of the Via Arduinna.
Every year Camping La Lienne welcomes pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, on foot and above all by bicycle, from the Netherlands, Germany and Flanders. It lies in Stoumont-Rahier, between two waymarked branches of the Via Arduinna, the pilgrim route through the Belgian Ardennes: the Aachen branch runs through Spa, La Gleize (6 km) and Trois-Ponts (8 km), the Liège branch through Aywaille (15 km) and Harre. The Via Arduinna, the Ardennes Way of St James
The Via Arduinna is the Way of St James across the Belgian Ardennes. It starts in Aachen, Liège or Malmedy depending on the branch, and the three branches meet in La Roche-en-Ardenne before continuing to Saint-Hubert, Orval and France. At Vitry-le-François it joins the GR 654 to Vézelay, the starting point of one of the great routes to Santiago. The 300 km between Malmedy and Vézelay have been fully waymarked since 2019. The campsite sits right between the Aachen branch (Spa, La Gleize, Trois-Ponts) and the Liège branch (Aywaille, Harre), a few kilometres from each.
Cycling pilgrims: the Lienne valley as a stage
Most pilgrims who stop with us travel by bike. From the Netherlands, Flanders or Germany, the route towards Vézelay and the south crosses the Ardennes through the Amblève and Lienne valleys before climbing to the Baraque de Fraiture, La Roche and Bastogne. The eastern variant of the Dutch Sint-Jacobsfietsroute also crosses the Belgian Ardennes, and EuroVelo 3, the Pilgrims Route, follows the Meuse through Liège, 45 km away. Our valley is a logical stage: the kilometres from Liège are behind you, the Ardennes climbs are starting, and the night is truly silent.
What a pilgrim finds at the campsite
A pitch for a small tent, with an electric socket to recharge a phone, GPS or e-bike battery, sanitary facilities with hot showers, free Wi-Fi and a bar in season. Your bike stays next to your tent. The nearest supermarkets are in Trois-Ponts and Stavelot.
Stages around the campsite
Northwards, the Aachen branch takes you in one day’s walk to Spa (20 km) via La Gleize and its December 44 museum. Southwards, Trois-Ponts (8 km) and the hamlet of Saint-Jacques mark the start of the stage to the Baraque de Fraiture and Odeigne, then La Roche-en-Ardenne. By bike, allow one day to La Roche or Bastogne, two days to Orval or Luxembourg City. The campsite also works as a rest day: the Lienne, the GR 571 trails and the villages of Stoumont and Rahier are within walking distance.
Long-distance walkers and riders
The campsite is also a natural stop for walkers on the GR 571 (Amblève, Salm and Lienne valleys) and the GR 5, and for cyclists crossing the Ardennes towards Luxembourg or France with no pilgrimage in mind. See also our page on stopping over between the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
